History of Piscataway
The town of Piscataway was founded by John Martin, Charles Gilman, Hugh Dunn and Hopewell Hull in 1666, as a 300 square mile area for 43 families. However, by December 18, 1666, one-third of the original area was sold, forming two towns: Woodbridge and Piscataway. Throughout the years, it has shrunk into 19 square miles to house over 47,000 families. At the time of the town's founding, the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe of the Algonkian group lived on the land, peacefully hunting, fishing and farming. The trails created by the residents became the sole means for the white settlers to travel through the wilderness to the seashore. However, the Indians became upset with the encroachment of the English because of they had taken their hunting lands away from them and they threatened to burn the houses of the Piscataway settlers until they exchanged goods for the land they once owned.
When Piscataway first formed, the settlers were farmers, growing apples, potatoes, grain, butter, meta and milk. By the nineteenth century, they became skilled in carpentry, blacksmith, carriage making, milling, leather tanning, shoemaking, hat making and tailoring. At this time, industries also started to form over the farms, which increased so fast that it now hides most of the farmland still in existence. Piscataway incorporated in 1798 and is now home to one of the top 500 largest businesses in the U.S.: American Standard Companies, Inc.
