History of Edison

Edison, formerly known as Raritan Township, was first settled in the late 1600s, when it was first part of the Woodbridge and Piscataway Townships.  By 1834, the village featured 10 to 12 dwellings, two taverns, a store and a schoolhouse.  By the second half of the 19th century, Edison's population grew due to the attractiveness of the rural landscape and the accessibility to several large cities for work.  The opening of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Easton and Amboy line allowed commutes to New York and other parts of New Jersey.

Edison with a group at Menlo Park, Menlo Park, NJ, Spring 1880 - US Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Edison National Historic Site Thomas Alva Edison was one of those passengers on the Pennsylvania line who decided that Menlo Park was to be the site for his laboratories because it was the highest point along the Pennsylvania Railroad between New York and Philadelphia.  The establishment of Thomas Edison's industrial research laboratory - he preferred calling it his "invention factory" - in 1876 brought world fame to the township as it became the site for some of the most innovative research and manufacturing feats of the 19th century.  During his time, Thomas Edison invented more than 400 patented items including the phonograph, the electric railway and the incadescent lamp.

From a rural-residential community in the 1920's, Edison has grown into a major population, commercial and industrial center. It ranks as the second most populous municipality in Middlesex County, and the sixth largest in New Jersey.  It serves as home to nearly 90,000 residents and is a hub of air, rail and highway networks for the distribution of numerous goods and services.

In 1954, residents proposed a change in the name of the town because several municipalities in the state were named Raritan.  Popular vote chose the name, Edison.
